I Spy
- There is movement in the field. We are tailing our man. We are having difficulty keeping our cool. We are not, we feel, entirely inconspicuous at this game of private investigation
Sleuthwork, as we also discover, is anything but a game. We could be shot, knifed, biffed at the very least, in the line of duty. Frank Monte, doyen of PIs, says so. Often.
Even after mission accomplishment, Monte points out from his red and pink velour citadel, there may be reprisals. Knee-capping? Letter bombs? He's a major-domo, a smooth-talking former ASIO man, also likes this line of patter. "Have a good weekend, it may be your last"; "Don't worry, we'll see the article gets published posthumously." He has a particular sense of humour.
